Karen Phelan, LPC
I took the long road to becoming a therapist, and I’m grateful for every turn along the way. I’ve always been fascinated by people — how families connect, how relationships evolve, and how we find strength through life’s challenges. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in case management with DCPP, Early Intervention, and hospital crisis departments. Those experiences shaped my understanding of resilience and the importance of compassionate support.
I work with adults, adolescents, and children, using a mix of art mediums and games in sessions to help reduce tension and resistance. These creative approaches make therapy more engaging and accessible for all ages. My counseling style blends cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and humanistic principles, focusing on helping clients process stress, disappointment, and life transitions with empathy and practical tools.
Having balanced multiple jobs and family responsibilities myself, I understand the pressures of daily life. I help clients navigate priorities, manage stress, and find clarity amid competing demands. I believe humor and shared humanity can make even the hardest conversations feel lighter and more real.
Outside of my practice, I’m active in the North Jersey community, volunteering with food pantries, shelters, and organizations that support children and families. I’m spiritual rather than religious, and I express that through service and connection.
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) dedicated to helping individuals and families build resilience, find balance, and move toward healing.
